Garage and Foundation Sealing

The attached garage is the most reliable autumn mouse entry in Rahway housing. A real door seal and corner gaskets stop more mice than any product.

We Identify Before We Treat

Noise at dawn is squirrels, not mice. Getting the species right first saves weeks of the wrong work.

No Bait Inside Occupied Homes

Rodenticide indoors means animals dying in wall voids and ceilings. We trap inside and keep bait outside in tamper-resistant stations.

Local Rodent Control for Rahway Property Owners

We are a pest control company working across Union County, and Rahway is one of the places we are called to most often. What follows is what we actually know about rodent control here — the building types, the conditions that drive it, and the local rules — rather than a page of stock copy with a place name dropped into it.

If something is turning up in your Rahway home or business, call (862) 256-6829 for an inspection. You will get an honest read on what is there and a written estimate before anything is scheduled.

Rahway, NJ at a Glance

Rahway sits in Union County at roughly 23 feet above sea level and is home to about 29,585 people. Those numbers matter more than they look: density, elevation and age of the housing stock are the three things that decide which pests a place actually gets.

House Mouse, Norway Rat or Something Else

In suburban and mixed housing the identification question is broader, because the candidates include animals that are not rodents in the pest-control sense at all.

House mouse (Mus musculus) is the overwhelming majority of calls. Droppings 3 to 6mm, dark, pointed at both ends; passes a 6mm gap; nests in insulation, garages and stored boxes; light scratching after dark.

Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) concentrates near commercial strips, restaurant refuse, rail lines and construction rather than spreading evenly through residential streets. Droppings 18 to 20mm with blunt ends, passes a 13mm gap, burrows, ranges 30 to 50 metres or more.

Deer mouse and white-footed mouse turn up on properties backing onto woodland β€” bicoloured, white underneath, larger eyes and ears β€” and are seasonal intruders rather than permanent residents.

What is often not a rodent at all: noise in the attic at dawn and dusk is usually grey squirrel, because mice are nocturnal and squirrels keep daylight hours. Heavy slow movement overhead at night is more likely raccoon. Getting this wrong wastes weeks, since that work is trapping and one-way-door exclusion rather than rodent work.

How They Get Into a House and Why They Stay

The working numbers are 6mm for a mouse, 13mm for a rat, and in detached housing the entry points are predictable and mostly near ground level.

  • The attached garage. The most reliable autumn entry in this stock: a worn bottom seal, failed corner gaskets, then straight up the common wall. People see a mouse in the kitchen and look for a kitchen entry; it came in through the garage weeks earlier.
  • Utility penetrations at the foundation and rim joist, and around the dryer vent, hose bib and air-conditioner line set.
  • The sill plate and rim joist, especially on older houses where the sill sits close to grade.
  • Balloon-framed walls running sill to attic β€” a mouse entering at grade is heard on the top floor, so treating the attic accomplishes nothing.
  • Crawlspace vents and access hatches with damaged or missing screening, and roofline gaps a squirrel has already opened.

In suburban housing the food is often birdseed, pet food stored in the garage or fallen fruit, and the harborage is a woodpile, dense ground cover against the foundation, or a shed on skids.

Trapping, Exclusion and What Actually Ends It

Exclusion is the only permanent step. Trapping removes the animals present; sealing decides whether more arrive. A quote with no exclusion in it is a quote for an ongoing service rather than a solution.

Interior: trapping, not bait. Rodenticide inside an occupied house means animals dying in wall voids and ceilings nobody can reach. Interior work is snap and multi-catch traps against walls, on grease trails, at right angles to the run, in real numbers β€” a dozen, not two.

Exterior: burrows and harborage. Where there is genuine rat activity, bait goes in tamper-resistant stations placed on active burrows and runs, and burrows get collapsed afterwards so that reopening is visible evidence rather than guesswork.

What is in the bait. Second-generation anticoagulants β€” brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difethialone, difenacoum β€” were removed from general consumer sale by the EPA's rodenticide risk mitigation decision and restricted to professional use in tamper-resistant stations. That is why the products left on the hardware shop shelf are the weak ones, and much of why do-it-yourself rat control fails. It also matters for secondary poisoning: a rodent carrying these stays toxic to whatever eats it β€” hawks, owls, cats, dogs. Bromethalin is a neurotoxin rather than an anticoagulant, acts faster and has no antidote. Ask which class is being used and where it is going.

Sealing materials. Copper mesh, hardware cloth and mortar work. Steel wool rusts out within a season, and expanding foam alone gets chewed straight through β€” it only works over a metal backing.

A garage door needs a genuine seal to the slab and intact corner gaskets, not a strip of foam tape.

Garages, Crawlspaces and Attics β€” and What Rodents Cost You

Three spaces account for most of the work, and each behaves differently.

The garage is usually both the entry and the food source β€” pet food, birdseed and grass seed in bags. Moving those into sealed hard containers costs nothing and removes the reason to come in. Then seal the door properly.

The crawlspace is harborage β€” exposed soil, damaged vent screens, a hatch that does not close, insulation to nest in. A crawlspace with rodent activity nearly always also has a moisture problem, and the two get solved together or not at all.

The attic is where people notice the problem and usually the wrong place to work β€” if the walls are balloon-framed it is simply where the noise arrives. Contaminated insulation loses performance and has to be replaced; it cannot be cleaned.

What it costs you. Mouse urinary protein is a recognised indoor allergen and a documented asthma trigger. Chewed wiring inside a wall or attic is a real ignition risk. And never dry-sweep or vacuum droppings in a crawlspace or attic β€” dampen, bag and remove instead.

Rodent Control β€” Common Questions

We hear it in the attic but sealed the attic. Why is it still there?

Because the entry is probably at ground level. In balloon-framed houses the wall cavity runs uninterrupted from the sill plate to the attic, so an animal entering near grade arrives upstairs without ever crossing a room. The work belongs at the sill and rim joist. If the noise is at dawn and dusk rather than after dark, it is more likely squirrels, which is a different job entirely.

We have a dog. What should we know?

Tell us in advance. Interior work should be trapping rather than bait so there is nothing toxic within reach, and exterior bait goes in tamper-resistant stations secured to the ground. Be aware of secondary poisoning as well: a dog that finds and eats a poisoned rodent is exposed to the rodenticide, which is a specific reason to ask what class is being used.

Does having mice mean the house is dirty?

No. What decides it is the age and construction of the building, the condition of the garage door and foundation penetrations, and what is stored where. Meticulously kept houses with a worn garage seal get mice every autumn.

Pest Pressure in Rahway, NJ

Rahway packs a lot of different ground into six square miles, and the Rahway River running straight through the middle of it is the thing that matters most. The low ground beside the river holds water long after a storm, keeps soil damp against foundations year round, and has a genuine flood history. A basement that takes water even occasionally is a different pest proposition from one that never does.

Downtown and the Arts District around the Union County Performing Arts Center carry the restaurant and food-business density that sets local rodent pressure, in a compact footprint with limited rear service access. Rahway Station sits on the Northeast Corridor where the North Jersey Coast Line splits off, moving commuters through town all day and bringing the rail-corridor harborage β€” ballast, embankment, fenceline vegetation β€” that Norway rats use as an uninterrupted run.

Rahway River Park and the Milton Lake side hold standing water and are the local mosquito sources. The west side toward Clark and Colonia is quieter and more suburban; the east side carries commercial and light-industrial land with the dock doors and storage yards that come with it.

Rahway uses ZIP 07065.

What Rahway Buildings Are Made Of

Rahway's stock spans more than a century and fails in correspondingly different ways.

Near the centre there are genuine Victorians and early twentieth-century frame houses with porches and complex rooflines, many of them balloon-framed, meaning the wall cavity runs uninterrupted from sill plate to attic. A mouse entering at grade is heard on the top floor, and treating the attic accomplishes nothing.

Through the middle of the city, post-war capes and colonials on modest lots with full basements and detached or tucked-under garages. Basements on the river side run damp as a matter of course, and a damp basement with a wood sill close to grade is exactly what subterranean termites and moisture-dependent insects want.

Along St. Georges Avenue and the corridors there are garden apartment complexes on slabs, where entry is at the slab edge, utility penetrations and door thresholds, and ground-floor units absorb almost all the mouse activity. Shared ceiling and wall voids run the length of those buildings, so a population moves between units without going outside.

Newer transit-oriented buildings have gone up around the station in the last decade β€” mid-rise, with trash rooms, structured parking and riser chases, which fail like city buildings rather than suburban ones.

The Calls We Get Most in Rahway

Mice in garden apartment ground-floor units each autumn. Slab edge and thresholds as overnight lows fall through the 50s, with the shared ceiling void letting them move along the building.

Basement pests after the river comes up. Springtails, silverfish, camel crickets and centipedes following water in, plus rodents evicted from burrows.

Mice on the top floor of an older frame house with the entry point down at the sill. Balloon framing.

Rats along the rail corridor and behind the downtown restaurants. Ballast and embankment harborage plus kerbside refuse.

Bed bugs in the station-area rentals and the garden apartments. Turnover plus attached construction plus shared wall voids.

Mosquitoes near the park and Milton Lake about a week to ten days after heavy rain.

Local Rules and Who to Call in Rahway

Rahway's health department and code enforcement handle property maintenance and pest complaints. Rental buildings of five units or more β€” which covers the garden apartment complexes and the newer station-area buildings β€” are registered under New Jersey's Hotel and Multiple Dwelling Law and inspected on a cycle by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, Bureau of Housing Inspection, so tenants there have a state route alongside the municipal one. Report to the owner or managing agent in writing and keep the copy before escalating. For mosquitoes, the Union County mosquito control programme carries out larval surveillance and treats catch basins and standing water on public land at no charge β€” worth using, because the breeding sources along the river and in the parks are not on your property.

One piece of context worth knowing: Rutgers researchers have documented widespread rodenticide resistance in urban house mice across the north-east, which is part of why bait alone is a weak strategy and why exclusion carries so much of the weight.

Rahway — Local Questions

Our basement floods and now there are insects down there. Are they related?

Directly. Springtails, silverfish, camel crickets and centipedes all need damp conditions and will colonise a basement that stays wet, then die back once it dries. Treating them without drying the space means treating them again next season. If something is coming up through the floor drain rather than in from outside, that is the sewer rather than the flood, and it needs the trap primed and a proper cover.

We are in a garden apartment and our neighbours have the same problem. Whose job is it?

The owner's. Pests in a rental are a maintenance and habitability condition, not a tenant expense, and in a complex of five or more units the building is registered with the state and inspected on a cycle. Practically, the shared ceiling and wall voids run the length of these buildings, so a population moves between apartments β€” which means the affected run has to be treated together rather than unit by unit. Put the request in writing so there is a record.

How a Rahway Treatment Actually Runs

Four stages, from the first phone call through the follow-up visit

Nothing is applied before we know what we are treating. The sequence below is what a standard Rahway job looks like from the property owner's side.

1
First Contact: Tell us what you are seeing, where, and for how long -- that alone narrows the species list considerably
2
On-Site Inspection: We walk the interior, the perimeter, the basement or crawlspace, and the roofline for entry points
3
Identification: Confirming species and population size, because a treatment aimed at the wrong insect wastes the visit
4
Treatment and Exclusion: Application where the pests actually harbor, paired with sealing the routes that let them in

New Jersey & New York City Metro

A brownstone and a high-rise fail in completely different ways.

A pre-war walk-up with shared risers does not get treated like a detached house or a new tower on the waterfront. Two decades across this metro means we already know how your building type tends to fail and which route the activity takes between units.
